Today I marveled

Today, I marveled at a glass:

A glass that toggled
on a jolted table,
eluding destruction
from a seemingly
inevitable fall.

But four times,
an edge of its bottom rim
toyed with lacquered surface,
its would be destroyer,
gravity’s co-conspirator.

The glass teased with
fourteen-hundred degrees
of anxious instability
before its stunning arrival
at a triumphant rest.

Today, I marvel
that a glass, lacking thought
or self-preserving inclinations
quite nearly shattered,
but did not.
